What Is Pure-Water Window Cleaning (and Why It Lasts 6× Longer)?

No soap, no squeegee, no streaks — and it stays clean far longer. Here’s the science of pure-water cleaning.

Quick answer

Pure-water window cleaning rinses glass with deionized water that contains zero dissolved minerals (0 TDS). Because there are no minerals to leave behind, the glass dries crystal-clear on its own — no soap, no squeegee marks, no streaks. And with no mineral film to attract dust, it stays clean up to 6× longer than a standard tap-water wash.

The problem with ordinary cleaning in Calgary

Calgary’s tap water is hard (see our hard water guide). Clean a window with it and, as it dries, the dissolved minerals are left behind as spots and film. Even careful squeegee work fights a losing battle, because the water you’re rinsing with is depositing minerals the moment it evaporates.

How pure-water cleaning works

Instead of fighting the minerals, we remove them first. Calgary tap water passes through a four-stage purification system:

  1. Sediment filter — traps dirt, sand and rust.
  2. Carbon filter — removes chlorine and organics that cause streaks.
  3. Reverse osmosis — a fine membrane rejects ~98% of dissolved minerals.
  4. Deionization — a final resin stage polishes the water to 0 TDS.

We apply that pure water through a soft brush on a water-fed pole, agitate the grime, and give a final pure rinse. The water sheets off and the glass dries on its own — perfectly clear.

Why “0 TDS” is the key number

TDS stands for total dissolved solids — basically how much mineral is in the water, in parts per million. Calgary tap water can run 150–250+ ppm. Pure water is 0 ppm. With nothing dissolved in it, pure water is actually “hungry” — it pulls dirt off the glass and leaves nothing behind when it evaporates.

The big benefits

  • Spot-free, streak-free drying — no towels or squeegee marks.
  • Stays clean longer — up to 6× longer between cleans, because there’s no film to grab dust.
  • Safer — high windows are cleaned from the ground, no ladders leaning on your home.
  • Gentler & greener — no soaps or chemicals needed, just purified water.
  • Cleans frames too — the brush and pure rinse lift grime off frames and sills, not just glass.

Frequently asked questions

What is pure-water window cleaning?

It rinses glass with deionized water that has zero dissolved minerals (0 TDS). With nothing to leave behind, the glass dries spot-free and streak-free on its own — no soap, no squeegee.

Does pure-water cleaning really last longer?

Yes. A tap-water wash dries with a faint mineral film that attracts dust; pure water leaves nothing behind, so glass stays clear noticeably longer — up to about 6× longer in our experience.

Is pure-water cleaning safe for my windows?

Yes, it’s gentle — just purified water and a soft brush, no harsh chemicals. It also lets us clean high windows safely from the ground.
